Cookie Policy
Effective date: 2026-05-17
This Cookie Policy explains how Nippon Brief (“we”, “us”, or “our”) uses cookies and similar tracking technologies on nipponbrief.com (the “Service”). It supplements our Privacy Policy and our Terms of Service.
By continuing to use the Service after being shown the cookie consent banner, you agree to our use of cookies as described in this policy and in accordance with the choices you make.
1. What Are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files stored on your device when you visit a website. They allow the site to remember your actions and preferences (such as language, login state, or analytics identifiers) over time.
We also use similar technologies including local storage, pixel tags, and device identifiers that perform comparable functions. References to “cookies” in this policy include these technologies unless context indicates otherwise.
2. Categories of Cookies We Use
We classify the cookies on Nippon Brief into four categories:
2.1 Strictly necessary
These are essential for the Service to function and cannot be disabled. Nippon Brief is a static site with no user accounts or login, so we do not set session or login cookies.
| Storage | Provider | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
nippon-brief-cookie-consent-v1 (browser local storage — not a cookie) | Nippon Brief | Stores your cookie choices so we don’t ask again | 12 months |
__cf_bm | Cloudflare | Bot management / security (HTTP-only) | ~30 minutes |
2.2 Functional
We do not currently set any functional cookies. Your language is selected through the URL (/en/, /ja/), not stored in a cookie. The consent banner includes a “Functional” category reserved for any future preference cookies; until such cookies exist, enabling it has no effect.
2.3 Analytics
These help us understand how visitors use the Service so we can improve content. They are set only after you grant Analytics consent in the cookie banner.
| Cookie | Provider | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
_ga, _ga_* | Google Analytics 4 | Distinguish unique visitors, measure usage | Up to 2 years |
_clck | Microsoft Clarity | Persist a per-user Clarity ID | 1 year |
_clsk | Microsoft Clarity | Group page views into a session | 1 day |
Google Analytics data is processed per Google’s Privacy & Terms with IP anonymization where supported. Microsoft Clarity (aggregate usage and session insights) is processed per Microsoft’s Privacy Statement.
2.4 Advertising
We do not currently serve display advertising, and no advertising cookies (e.g. Google AdSense / DoubleClick) are set at this time.
Our articles contain affiliate links that route through our own /go/ redirects. We do not set first-party advertising or affiliate cookies; an affiliate network may set its own cookie only after you click through to that partner’s website. If we enable display advertising in future, this section and the consent banner will be updated, and any such cookies would be set only after your consent.
3. Your Choices
3.1 Cookie consent banner
The first time you visit Nippon Brief, you will see a cookie consent banner. You can:
- Accept all cookies — allows all categories above
- Reject non-essential cookies — only strictly necessary cookies are set
- Customize — granular control over functional, analytics, and advertising categories
Your choice is stored in your browser for 12 months (or until you clear your browser storage for this site). You can change or withdraw it at any time by clicking the “Cookie Preferences” link in the site footer, which reopens the banner.
3.2 Browser settings
Most browsers allow you to:
- View what cookies are stored on your device
- Block all cookies
- Block only third-party cookies
- Delete existing cookies
See your browser’s help documentation for instructions:
Note: Blocking strictly necessary cookies may break parts of the Service (such as language preference persistence or login).
3.3 Opt-out for Google services
- Google Analytics: Install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on
- Google personalized ads: Adjust Google Ad Settings
- Personalized ads across the web (industry tools): Visit aboutads.info (US) or youronlinechoices.eu (EU)
3.4 Do Not Track
The Service does not currently respond to “Do Not Track” (DNT) browser signals, as there is no industry consensus on how to interpret them. We respect the choices you make via our cookie consent banner instead.
4. Third-Party Cookies
Some cookies are set by third parties when their content (ads, embedded videos, social media widgets) is loaded on the Service. We have limited control over these cookies. The main third parties are:
| Third party | Function | Set when | Privacy policy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Analytics 4 | Analytics | Analytics consent | policies.google.com/privacy |
| Microsoft Clarity | Analytics / session insights | Analytics consent | privacy.microsoft.com/privacystatement |
| Cloudflare | Hosting, CDN, security | Always (necessary) | cloudflare.com/privacypolicy |
| Affiliate networks (GetYourGuide, Klook, Booking.com, Airalo, Agoda, Amazon) | Affiliate tracking | Only after you click an affiliate link through to the partner’s site | (see respective sites) |
We do not currently embed third-party advertising, video players, or social media widgets that set cookies on our pages. These third parties may use cookies to track you across other websites where their services are present; refer to their respective privacy policies for details.
5. Regional Specifics
5.1 European Union, EEA, and United Kingdom
We comply with the GDPR, UK GDPR, and ePrivacy Directive. Non-essential cookies (analytics, advertising) are only set with your prior, explicit consent. You may withdraw consent at any time via “Cookie Preferences” without affecting your prior browsing.
5.2 California, United States
Under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA / CPRA):
- We do not “sell” personal information in the traditional sense
- We do not currently run behavioral advertising, so there is no “sale” or “sharing” of personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising to opt out of. If we introduce such advertising, you will be able to opt out via the cookie consent banner (“Cookie Preferences” in the footer)
5.3 Japan
For readers in Japan, we comply with the Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI / 個人情報保護法) as revised in 2022. Cookie use is disclosed in this policy and the Privacy Policy.
6. Updates to This Policy
We may update this Cookie Policy to reflect changes in technology, regulation, or our practices. Material changes will be posted on this page with an updated effective date. We will re-prompt for consent if the changes materially expand our cookie use.
