Affiliate Disclosure
Effective date: 2026-06-02
Nippon Brief participates in affiliate programs. This page explains what that means, which programs we use, and how we maintain editorial independence despite carrying affiliate links.
This disclosure exists to comply with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising” (16 CFR Part 255), Japan’s 景品表示法 (Act against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations), and equivalent transparency rules in the EU, UK, Korea, and Taiwan.
1. What an Affiliate Relationship Means
When you click certain links on Nippon Brief and complete a qualifying action — typically a purchase, booking, or signup — the merchant pays Nippon Brief a referral commission. The price you pay does not change because of this commission, and we never receive personal information from the merchant about you.
We mark affiliate links in two ways:
- Inline disclosure: Articles that contain affiliate links carry a single-line note in the editorial footer (“We earn commission from qualifying purchases through some links on this page.“)
- Tracked redirect: Affiliate URLs are routed through
nipponbrief.com/go/<key>so the destination, parameters, and commission attribution are managed centrally and visibly
2. Affiliate Programs We Participate In
Nippon Brief currently participates in (or is in the application process for) the following affiliate programs:
Travel & Activities
- Klook — Japan tours, activities, JR Pass, transport passes
- GetYourGuide — Tours and tickets
- KKday — Activities and experiences
- Booking.com Affiliate Partner Programme — Accommodation bookings
- Agoda Affiliate — Accommodation bookings
Travel Infrastructure
- JR Pass operator partners — Rail pass purchases (e.g., JRPass.com, Klook JR Pass listings)
- Airalo / Ubigi / Holafly / Saily — eSIM data plans for visitors to Japan
Retail & Goods
- Amazon Associates (US/JP) — Books, electronics, travel goods referenced in articles
- Rakuten Ichiba Affiliate — Books, regional foods, and other goods
As an Amazon Associate, Nippon Brief earns from qualifying purchases. This site displays affiliate advertising, including Amazon Associates.
If we add new affiliate partners, this list will be updated and the article footer will note the disclosure.
3. Editorial Independence
Affiliate commission does not influence what we recommend.
- We recommend products on editorial merit alone. When a free or non-affiliated alternative serves readers better, we say so and link to it.
- We do not accept payment for favorable coverage. Sponsored content disguised as editorial is incompatible with our Editorial Policy.
- We disclose conflicts of interest in-line when an article specifically recommends a product whose vendor pays us a commission.
- Negative findings are published anyway. If a product underperforms in our verification, we publish that finding regardless of its affiliate program status — and may delist the affiliate link.
A merchant being in our affiliate program does not guarantee coverage. Most of the products we cover, we cover because readers ask about them.
4. How We Verify Affiliate Products
Before we recommend a product:
- We verify pricing and terms against the merchant’s primary source on the day of publication
- We check for known service complaints in independent forums (Reddit, Trustpilot, official ombudsman registries)
- We compare against at least one direct competitor
- We update the article when underlying pricing or terms change (see Editorial Policy §4 on corrections)
The Last verified date at the top of each article tells you when the affiliate-linked information was last confirmed against primary sources.
5. FTC Compliance Statement (U.S. Readers)
Per FTC 16 CFR § 255, Nippon Brief is required to disclose any “material connection” between us and the products or services we cover. The connection is:
- We earn affiliate commission from the merchants listed in §2
We do not receive free products, paid placements, or undisclosed sponsorships.
6. 景表法対応 (Japan-Market Readers)
